Penetrometer Penetrometer is a laboratory instrument used to determine the consistency (penetration value) of stiff and semi-solid materials in terms of DOP (Division of Penetrometer). The test is based on measuring the depth of penetration of a standard cone or plunger into the sample under its own weight for a specified time. The instrument consists of a precision circular dial calibrated in DOP, a plunger assembly, a standard cone with specified dimensions and mass, calibrated weights, and a sample cup. The penetration occurs due to gravitational force, and the depth achieved after a fixed time interval is directly read on the dial. Penetrometers are widely used for evaluating the consistency of lubricating greases, waxes, stiff paints, distempers, soils, and similar materials.
